Natural stones have unique characteristics of their own and are subject to variations in colour, patterns and veining. Not every tile looks the same as the one before and therefore cannot be repeated. Consistency of colours, shade, pattern or veining is random and therefore must be expected.
Due to the natural characteristics of natural stone being porous, it is always recommended to pre seal the product prior to application and seal again after application. This will then lower the risk of staining to the product and generally make it easier to clean the stone using recommended cleaning products.
Due to the natural beauty of the stone and its aesthetic look, it will always retain its value compared to a porcelain application. It also allows you to reface or refresh the surface in most cases to its original appearance. It is also commonly known in stone applications for the housing industry to give a better return value on the property than a porcelain or vitrified that has been laid.
Ceramic tiles are a light weight clay-based tile. They are pressed at a lower pressure rate and fired at a lower temperature than porcelain tiles. This manufacturing process means they are always finished with a durable glaze which carries the colour and pattern. Ceramic tiles are available in two finishes—gloss and matt. Ceramic tiles can be used for both floor and wall; they are great for walls in any area of the home and are softer and easier to cut than porcelain. Ceramic tiles are suitable for light to moderate traffic.
Porcelain tiles are made using very fine, high-quality materials with high silica content. Pressed at a high pressure rate and fired at high temperatures, they are typically much less porous than other tiles and do not always require sealing.
Porcelain tiles are either glazed or non glazed. Glazed porcelain means the tiles come in either gloss, matt or textured finish and unglazed porcelain means the tiles come with a natural, polished or textured finish. Unglazed porcelain tiles are recommended to be sealed to prevent the tile from staining. Most porcelain tiles are rectified which means the tiles have straight cut edges. Due to porcelain tiles being rectified, you can have your tiles laid with minimal grout joints of 1.5mm as per Australian standards.
Generally with porcelain tiles, the colour runs right through them to be polished, honed or produced in natural finish. Ceramic tiles are almost always finished with a durable glaze although the colour does not run right through the tile. Porcelain tiles can be used in almost any internal and external application and are available in many finishes and sizes in the same series and colour formats. A high percentage of new home buyers and renovators will choose a porcelain tile due to its strength and beauty. Ceramic tiles are low maintenance, and more suitable for use in domestic areas although chips may be noticeable.
Outdoor tiles are exposed to harsher conditions and therefore need to be resistant to the elements such as rain, frost and slipperiness.
